Children’s Sunday School
We are very proud of the programs we offer to children at Polk Street and are very excited about our Sunday school program.  Sunday school begins at 9:30 and ends at 10:40.  Preschool children should be taken to their nursery rooms while elementary children should be taken to the gym to participate in our gathering activities.

Signing In and Signing Out
To better help us keep your children safe, every child from birth through fifth grade needs to be signed into and out of the classroom by a parent or guardian for Sunday school or nursery care.  Preschool children’s sign-in sheets are in their classrooms.  Ele
mentary children will need to be signed in at the table by the foot of the stairs in the activity building.  If you have an elementary child and arrive after 9:50 (when gathering activities have ended), you will need to sign them in and take them to their classroom upstairs in the children’s village.

Gathering Time
All students from Kindergarten through fifth grade will begin their Sunday School hour in the gym for our gathering time.  It is a weekly kickoff to our Sunday school time and runs from 9:30 until 9:50.  It is a time of games, music, and stories.  The gathering helps your child to understand the lessons that are about to be presented and will provide a connection between the various stations that they will be experiencing in each unit.  At 9:50, the adult volunteers take the elementary children upstairs to the children’s village for their Sunday lesson.

Sunday School Curriculum
Our children's Sunday School is based on the PoweXpress rotation series by Cokesbury (see below for more information). We have a three year cycle of topics that are covered in our department.

PowerXpress for Elementary Kids
Imagine a Sunday school classroom where children examine Van Gogh’s Starry Night and paint their own version while discussing God’s promise to Abram when God said, “Look at the sky and try to count the stars; you will have as many descendants as that.” (Genesis 15:5, Good News)

And can you imagine visiting the cooking room for Sunday school class? That’s where some children are assembling a fruit salad while others are frying tortillas. They tell you they are making the kinds of food that might have been served when Abraham held a feast when Isaac was weaned (Genesis 21:8). They invite you to come back in a few minutes and eat with them.

With PowerXpress, Cokesbury’s rotation format curriculum, children will experience the Bible story in many different ways. When children see AND hear AND do, they retain 90% of the experience. As a result, the Bible story and its meaning for them will stay with them for life!

Our children will experience 10-12 different Bible stories and topics during the year.  Each story will be explored throughout our
different Sunday school stations which include:  storytelling, art, cooking, science, music, games, computers, and video.
