Ideas for Children in Worship
All of our services are intergenerational. While nursery care is available for preschoolers, the congregation welcomes its younger
members during the worship services. Here is a list of tips to help you
and your children enjoy the service.
- Sitting near the front gives younger children a better view of the
sanctuary and the service.
- Take a look at the bulletin with your child. Let them know of
baptisms, communion or any other special parts of today’s
service.
- Sing the hymns, pray, voice the responses. Children learn
liturgical behavior by copying yours.
- Help your child look up the scriptures and the hymns and mark
it so it can be read and followed when it is time.
- Let your child help hold the hymnal and Bible. Even if they can’t
read, they will feel included.
- Encourage your child to stand up when appropriate and to
participate in the service along with the congregation in any way
that they are able.
- Use a gentle touch—an arm around the shoulder or holding
hands give reassurance and appropriate attention.
- Let your child greet the pastors each week after the service.
Knowing the ministers personally will add incentive for the child
to pay better attention during the service.
