Program Areas
People of all ages come together at PSUMC to worship, to fellowship, and to support one another. We offer wonderful programs for all those ages, from children to senior adults.

To help you find the programs in which you might be interested, we have divided those programs into our ministry areas. Choose from the list on the left, and if you don't find what you are looking for, then use the search tool at the bottom of the page.

The care and education of your child is one of the most important decisions you will make.

At the Child Development Center of Polk Street UMC, we offer a Christian-based program that encourages social, spiritual, emotional, physical and academic development. The CDC is a place where children learn and grow until they are ready for elementary school.

We offer flexibility in scheduling by providing a variety of options to fit your needs and invite you to visit us at Polk Street Child Development Center. You are always welcome to look around and find the answers you need to make the right choice for you and your child.

More information about our program & curriculum is available by following this link to the Child Development Center webpage.  Feel free to call the CDC office (374-3198) for more information or to arrange a tour of our facilities.  The CDC staff can also be reached by email at cdc@psumc.com

If you are new to Amarillo, and between the ages of 20-35 we're glad you found us. Meeting people, finding the good restaurants, and realizing that the names of the streets here can change in mid-intersection: There's a lot to making connections in a new locale. We hope you'll connect with us at one of the opportunities listed below:

LEARN
We talk about faith, life, work and fun. Get connected to a deeper relationship with God in a supportive atmosphere where you can ask, think and share with others. There are a wealth of learning options at Polk Street; mid-week evening classes, Bible studies at noon, and special classes like Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. Depending on the time of year, we may meet as a young adult group during the Sunday School hour or on Wednesday evenings for Bible Study.

SERVE
Service and Mission Opportunities are organized every quarter. Our most recent young adult projects have been at the local Habitat for Humanity. These projects help you connect to those in need.

SHARE
Fellowship Activities are scheduled once each month and there are spontaneous opportunities almost every week to share a meal together, usually at a local restaurant. We also meet at church wide events and in members' homes. Fellowship activities help you connect to new friends.

WORSHIP
Worship opportunities happen every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 10:55 a.m. and at the special seasons of the church year including Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and Easter. Worship connects you to the strength and power of faith in God that will keep you going.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
Young Adults are involved in ministries throughout our church and community. This is just a short listing of ways that young adults are active in the life of the church. You will also find us in choirs, men's and women's groups, teaching Sunday School, sponsoring our youth group, helping make the decisions about the mission and ministry of the church and serving on church-wide mission trips.

Missions

Outreach Opportunities

As the body of Christ, we are called to do his works. Towards this goal, PSUMC has many ongoing missions and we invite you to get involved with one or more of them. We have a wide variety of missions with varying levels of time commitments. Whether it's an hour a month here in Amarillo, or 24 hours a day for seven days straight during the summer, there is something here for everyone.

High Plains Food Bank

On the first Saturday of each month volunteers meet at the High Plains Food Bank from 9:00 a.m. – Noon to help sort and box food donations to be distributed to those in need around the Panhandle.  For more information contact Ken Hollabaugh at 352-3245 or Kevin Deckard at 374-2891 kevindeckard@psumc.com

Basic Buddies

This outreach ministry involves spending a day or part of a day each week as a friend to one of the clients of Jan Werner Adult Day Care.  This is a great opportunity to share the love and fellowship of Jesus Christ to those in need.  If you would like to be a Basic Buddy, please call Janie Jones at 352-1523.

San Jacinto Kid’s Café

San Jacinto Kid’s Cafe ensures that children, who otherwise wouldn't receive an evening meal, are fed a nutritious dinner. PSUMC volunteers meet at San Jacinto Elementary School every Tuesday afternoon during the school year. We help serve meals to children in the afternoon from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, contact our coordinator, Glenda Guthrie, at 376-6427 glenda43@hotmail.com or Kevin Deckard at 374-2891 kevindeckard@psumc.com

Refugee Support

Polk Street UMC is committed to helping support refugee families who have fled to the United States as a result of persecution.  Currently we are helping a family from Myanmar (Burma).  Some of our needs are funding, transportation, friendship, and helping them to assimilate into the American culture.  If you are interested in helping please contact Kevin Deckard at 374-2891 kevindeckard@psumc.com

Men’s Four Corners Mission Trip

Polk Street United Methodist Church has recently completed its 4th annual mission trip to the 4 Corners Native American Reservation.  The first trip to Thoreau, New Mexico in 2006 consisted of 3 members from the church. Our second trip was to Aneth, Utah in 2007, and the team grew to 8 members.  Our third trip took us back to Utah to Dowozhii Bikooh UMC with 9 members and last year we went to Ojo Amarillo, New Mexico with 11 team members.  The purpose of these trips have been to help build churches for new Native American Indian United Methodist congregations and a parsonage for one of their pastors.  We are in the early planning process for our July 2010 trip to Shiprock, New Mexico and invite anyone interested in participating financially or hands on to contact Joe Chappell jchapp@arn.net, Kerry Knorpp kerryknorpp@yahoo.com or Kevin Deckard kevindeckard@psumc.com.

English as a Second Language

The ESL ministry of Polk Street UMC is one that is growing in demand. The program is computer based, but you don’t need to be a computer whiz to teach it.  All you need is a heart to help others learn English and a good grasp of the English language yourself. Our current need is more tutors.  For more information, please contact Sue Hamilton at 337-5211 sue.reader@yahoo.com or Kevin Deckard at 374-2891 kevindeckard@psumc.com.

Another Chance House

Another Chance House is a home for men who have recently been incarcerated in a correctional facility.  They are striving to become productive members of society.  There are strict requirements for all residents including holding down a job, keeping the home clean and in good repair and absolutely no panhandling on street corners.  Polk Street UMC has committed to providing at least one home cooked meal a month to the 50 - 55 residents of Another Chance House.  If you would like to help prepare/purchase and serve a meal please, contact Kevin Deckard at 374-2891 kevindeckard@psumc.com
