Pastor Burt’s father and grandfather were both Methodist Pastors so he has lived his Christian faith in the United Methodist Church. He first began actively responding to his baptism at confirmation and continued to renew his commitment to Christ throughout his life. “I hope God isn’t done saving me yet” is a phrase he believes in.

He responded to God’s call for ministry upon his life in June 1985 while on a rocky beach in Fano, Italy. He had just completed his sophomore year at Hendrix College and was part of the Hendrix Choir Tour and was deeply moved by the historical witness of the Christians in places like Rome, Vienna and Assisi.

He began serving as a pastor in the fall of 1985 and has served churches in Arkansas, North Carolina and Texas. He attended The Divinity School at Duke University where he earned a Master in Divinity and a Doctorate of Ministry from Perkins School of Theology. He calls himself the “Sheepdog” because he believes that Jesus is the only true Shepherd (John 10:11).

Pastor Burt was appointed as Sr. Pastor of Polk Street UMC in June 2011. He and his wife, Shawn, have two grown children, Micah and Meagan. He enjoys traveling with his wife, cycling and golf.

In 2015 his first book, Where do you kneel?, was published and you can learn more about it at www.burtpalmer.com.
