From Pastor Mark
This Sunday we are looking forward to “Back To School Sunday” as we will bless our students and their backpacks; hear from an area coach and college student, combined with the message “That Age-Old Question” from Romans 12:2. All students will receive a special gift from our youth and children’s ministries, and our Chancel Choir will be back in full swing. We still have casual-dress Sundays until after Labor Day, so please come as you are!
Plans are being made right now for our Polk Street Celebration on Wednesday August 21 at 6:00 pm in the Great Hall. We will hear from our leaders about the vision of Polk Street for this upcoming year and how we can get involved. Then at 7:00 pm we’ll build a 30ft banana split ice cream sundae! I hope you and your family will be there as we celebrate what God is doing at Polk Street!

Matter of Balance Class for Seniors
Matter of Balance is an evidence based program that reduces the fear of falling and helps seniors increase activity levels.
*One in three adults age 65 and older falls each year.
*The chances of falling and being seriously injured in a fall increase with age.
*Over 90% of hip fractures are caused by falls and the rate for women is almost three times the rate for men.
*People age 75 and older who fall are four to five times more likely than those 65 to 74 to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer.
Laurie McAfee with Area Agency for the Aging will be conducting a Matter of Balance class at Polk Street United Methodist Church beginning 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 4th in the Loft of the Christian Life Center. There will be eight classes and each one will last about an hour to an hour and a half. The class is limited to the first 10 people to sign up. This class is offered at no cost to you. If you would like to sign up or need more information, please contact Kevin Deckard at 374-2891 or firstname.lastname@example.org
At the heart of the Polk Street United Music Ministry is worship. We sing and play instruments to point ourselves and others toward God. Have no fear, we hold no auditions for our choirs. Whether you are a professional musician or just a music lover, you will enjoy it here. Everyone is welcome to make a joyful noise to the Lord!
Take a minute to look over the opportunities we offer. Our prayer is that all who participate will grow in Christ and experience God’s unconditional love.
Our Sanctuary choir rehearses each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room on the 2nd floor. For more information, contact George Biffle at email@example.com.
Jubilate (adults) and Wesley (children and youth)bell choirs begin rehearsals on Wednesday, September 4. Wesley meets at 5:15 and Jubilate meets at 6:00. If you can read music and count, you can play in the bell choirs. For more information, contact Noel-Paul Laur at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Youth Choir (6th through the 12th grade) begins rehearsals on Sunday, August 25 from 5:00-6:00 PM. On August 18, we are having a social for all of the youth at 5:00 pm for fun, fellowship, and to answer any questions about the Youth Choir. We have lots of fun events lined up for the year, including community outreach opportunities and a DFW tour!
We have three children’s choirs: Angel for ages 3 & 4, Cherub for pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st grade, and Bethlehem for grades 2nd through 5th. Rehearsals for all of the children’s choirs begin Wednesday, August 28 from 6:00-6:30. We welcome back Amy Taylor, who will conduct the Angel Choir; Nakita Harris will conduct the Cherub Choir, and Holly Johnston will conduct the Bethlehem Choir. We have a fun year of music planned and would love to see all of our kids in one of the choirs.

Blessing of the Backpacks
This Sunday, August 11, we are blessing our backpacks as we ready for the new school year. We will have a special moment in each service to pray for our children and teachers.
Wednesday Night Programming
On Wednesdays, for the 2019-2020 school year PSUMC Kids will focus on 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. “don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you? Don’t you know that you have the Holy Spirit from God, and you don’t belong to yourselves? 20 You have been bought and paid for, so honor God with your body.”
This year we will learn how to honor God with our body by understanding how to take care of it. We want to be great examples to the world and part of that is taking care of the ONE body that God gave us. On Wednesday evenings we will learn about:
· Nutrition· Exercise· Sleep · Stress management
There are a lot of pressures in the world and our goal is for our Polk Street Kids to be strong believers in Christ, both spiritually and physically! With God, they can do anything!
The first series led by Health Coach and PSUMC member Farrar Mansfield will begin on Wednesday, August 28th at 6:30. Spread the word and bring your friends!
