Wednesday, August 21: Polk Street UMC Celebration
Wednesday, August 28: All Mid-Week Activities Begin
From Pastor Mark
What a joy it was to send our kids off with prayer last Sunday with our Back to School Sunday! We will be continuing to pray for them all year long. Our Choir makes such a difference in our worship services, and I am so glad to have them back leading us in worship.
This Sunday, August 18, we’ll celebrate our CDC (Child Development Center here at Polk Street) as they begin their 61st year in ministry. We will have a special message called “Belling the Cat” from Isaiah 6:1-8.
I hope you will make plans to be at the POLK STREET CELEBRATION for our whole church next Wednesday August 21 at 6:00 pm in the Great Hall. Our staff is eager to share vision, ideas, and plans for this next coming year. At 7:00 pm you won’t want to miss leaders from Polk Street building at 30 ft. banana split Sundae!
God bless you Polk Street, and we look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday!
San Jacinto Elementary School Tailgate Party
On Thursday, September 5, from 5:30–6:30 p.m., Polk Street UMC members are helping with a tailgate party at San Jacinto Elementary School. We will have 3 pickups there and will be giving away soft drinks and ice cream to students & their families after they meet their teachers. Other churches will be cooking hot dogs, passing out chips and other refreshments. This is a great way to connect with staff, students and teachers at San Jacinto where we have been in partnership in mission & ministry for over 8 years. You are invited to come out that evening and be a welcoming & grace-filled presence for Christ as we offer His love in a very tangible way. If you have a PSUMC name tag, be sure and wear it! Also wear your favorite college t-shirt if you have one.
The address is 3400 W. 4th Ave. Turn off of 6th St. & north on Carolina. For more information contact Kevin Deckard, firstname.lastname@example.org 374-2891.

Matter of Balance Class for Seniors
Matter of Balance is an evidence based program that reduces the fear of falling and helps seniors increase activity levels.
*One in three adults age 65 and older falls each year.
*The chances of falling and being seriously injured in a fall increase with age.
*Over 90% of hip fractures are caused by falls and the rate for women is almost three times the rate for men.
*People age 75 and older who fall are four to five times more likely than those 65 to 74 to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer.
Laurie McAfee with Area Agency for the Aging will be conducting a Matter of Balance class at Polk Street United Methodist Church beginning 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 4th in the Loft of the Christian Life Center. There will be eight classes and each one will last about an hour to an hour and a half. The class is limited to the first 10 people to sign up. This class is offered at no cost to you. If you would like to sign up or need more information, please contact Kevin Deckard at 374-2891 or email@example.com
United Methodist Men
First Friday Speaker - Friday, September 6 - Anthony B. Harris was born in Vancouver, Washington. Having received Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 13, Pastor Harris sought to avoid the call into ministry for the next 10 years. No longer able to avoid the call of God on his life, Pastor Harris began the process of preparing to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. After 34 years of ministry and 24 years as a senior pastor, God has truly blessed the ministry of Anthony B. Harris. From California, Washington and now Texas, God has used Pastor Harris as His instrument to grow each of the three churches he has pastored in the areas of “Spiritual, numerical and financial” growth.
Along the way Pastor Harris has achieved both a Bachelor of Arts and Master Degree in Biblical studies. Over the years God has blessed Pastor Harris to serve on many boards and ministry from the National, State and local levels. While Pastor Harris has been blessed to serve in many areas of ministry, his greatest passion is that of teaching and training pastor and churches in the area of church health. For the last 12 years Pastor Harris has been blessed to do workshops all over this country on Church Health, Effective Leadership, Mentor training, Church Planting and Financial growth. Recently Pastor Harris received his national certification in fatherhood training and mentorship.
Pastor Harris is married to Tanya Harris and the father of seven children and sixteen grandchildren.
At the heart of the Polk Street United Music Ministry is worship. We sing and play instruments to point ourselves and others toward God. Have no fear, we hold no auditions for our choirs. Whether you are a professional musician or just a music lover, you will enjoy it here. Everyone is welcome to make a joyful noise to the Lord!
Take a minute to look over the opportunities we offer. Our prayer is that all who participate will grow in Christ and experience God’s unconditional love.
Our Sanctuary choir rehearses each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room on the 2nd floor. For more information, contact George Biffle at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Jubilate (adults) and Wesley (children and youth)bell choirs begin rehearsals on Wednesday, September 4. Wesley meets at 5:15 and Jubilate meets at 6:00. If you can read music and count, you can play in the bell choirs. For more information, contact Noel-Paul Laur at email@example.com.
The New Beginnings Youth Choir (6th through the 12th grade) begins rehearsals on Sunday, August 25 from 5:00-6:00 PM. On August 18, we are having a social for all of the youth at 5:00 pm for fun, fellowship, and to answer any questions about the Youth Choir. We have lots of fun events lined up for the year, including community outreach opportunities and a DFW tour!
We have three children’s choirs: Cherub for ages 3 thru Pre-K, Angel for kindergarten thru 2nd grade, and Bethlehem for grades 3rd through 5th. Rehearsals for all of the children’s choirs begin Wednesday, August 28 from 6:00-6:30. We welcome back Amy Taylor, who will conduct the Angel Choir; Nakita Harris will conduct the Cherub Choir, and Holly Johnston will conduct the Bethlehem Choir. We have a fun year of music planned and would love to see all of our kids in one of the choirs.

Wednesday Night Programming
On Wednesdays, for the 2019-2020 school year PSUMC Kids will focus on 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. “don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you? Don’t you know that you have the Holy Spirit from God, and you don’t belong to yourselves? 20 You have been bought and paid for, so honor God with your body.”
This year we will learn how to honor God with our body by understanding how to take care of it. We want to be great examples to the world and part of that is taking care of the ONE body that God gave us. On Wednesday evenings we will learn about:
· Nutrition· Exercise· Sleep · Stress management
There are a lot of pressures in the world and our goal is for our Polk Street Kids to be strong believers in Christ, both spiritually and physically! With God, they can do anything!
The first series led by Health Coach and PSUMC member Farrar Mansfield will begin on Wednesday, August 28th at 6:30. Spread the word and bring your friends!
