Sunday, September 8, “God is Big Enough” sermon series begins.

From Pastor Mark

Work is work. Whether you work for a living, work in the yard, or work at your faith, we all work somewhere somehow.  Sometimes we either love it or hate it, even in the same moment. What if there was meaning behind how we worked? What if God created us for what we do and are when we work?

This Labor Day Sunday Sept. 1, our discipleship moment will be from the Young Engineer of the Year, Jonathan Hartman, and our message will be “Work It!” from Colossians 3:23-24. Holy Communion will be served.

San Jacinto Elementary School Tailgate Party

On Thursday, September 5, from 5:30–6:30 p.m., Polk Street UMC members are helping with a tailgate party at San Jacinto Elementary School. We will have 3 pickups there and will be giving away soft drinks and ice cream to students & their families after they meet their teachers. Other churches will be cooking hot dogs, passing out chips and other refreshments. This is a great way to connect with staff, students and teachers at San Jacinto where we have been in partnership in mission & ministry for over 8 years. You are invited to come out that evening and be a welcoming & grace-filled presence for Christ as we offer His love in a very tangible way. If you have a PSUMC name tag, be sure and wear it! Also wear your favorite college t-shirt if you have one.

The address is 3400 W. 4th Ave. Turn off of 6th St. & north on Carolina. For more information contact Kevin Deckard, kevindeckard@psumc.com 374-2891.

Anthony B. Harris.png

First Friday Speaker - Friday, September 6 - Anthony B. Harris was born in Vancouver, Washington. Having received Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 13, Pastor Harris sought to avoid the call into ministry for the next 10 years. No longer able to avoid the call of God on his life, Pastor Harris began the process of preparing to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. After 34 years of ministry and 24 years as a senior pastor, God has truly blessed the ministry of Anthony B. Harris. From California, Washington and now Texas, God has used Pastor Harris as His instrument to grow each of the three churches he has pastored in the areas of “Spiritual, numerical and financial” growth.

Along the way Pastor Harris has achieved both a Bachelor of Arts and Master Degree in Biblical studies. Over the years God has blessed Pastor Harris to serve on many boards and ministry from the National, State and local levels. While Pastor Harris has been blessed to serve in many areas of ministry, his greatest passion is that of teaching and training pastor and churches in the area of church health. For the last 12 years Pastor Harris has been blessed to do workshops all over this country on Church Health, Effective Leadership, Mentor training, Church Planting and Financial growth. Recently Pastor Harris received his national certification in fatherhood training and mentorship.

Pastor Harris is married to Tanya Harris and the father of seven children and sixteen grandchildren.

Disciple’s Paintings

Come visit the 3rd floor see the famous Kenneth Wyatt paintings of the Disciples, donated to Polk Street UMC by the Byron Singleton Family.

Dr. Wyatt, from Tulia, is a man dedicated to his calling, evidenced by the tremendous number of hours he spends at the easel. With renewed inspiration from God, family, friends, owners and the awesome examples of great artists in years past, as well as some really fantastic artists of today, he intends to continue "twisting the tubes" and "pushing the paint around" as long as he feels his Heavenly Father has need of his work.

If you want to see more, check out the Kenneth Wyatt Gallery at 7306 SW 34th, Ste. 12 in Amarillo.

PSUMC Music

At the heart of the Polk Street United Music Ministry is worship. We sing and play instruments to point ourselves and others toward God. Have no fear, we hold no auditions for our choirs. Whether you are a professional musician or just a music lover, you will enjoy it here. Everyone is welcome to make a joyful noise to the Lord!

Take a minute to look over the opportunities we offer. Our prayer is that all who participate will grow in Christ and experience God’s unconditional love.

Sanctuary Choir

Our Sanctuary choir rehearses each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room on the 2nd floor. For more information, contact George Biffle at georgebiffle@psumc.com.

Bell Choirs

Hand chimes and hand bells are rung by hand(s) and played in chromatically arranged sets or octaves on foam-covered tables, acting as one instrument, with each ringer responsible for certain notes whenever they appear. Chimes are used with children to teach music and to train them as prospective hand bell ringers; and along with youth and adults’ hand bells’ music on occasion. All ringers read from a score similar to a piano score. If you can read music and count, you can play in the bell choirs. For more information, contact Noel-Paul Laur at noelpaullaur@psumc.com.

Tower Chimers (K – Grade 5) - Wednesdays, 5:30 – 6:00 pm in Room 220. The choir rings at the 10:55 am worship service the same Sundays that the Children’s Choirs perform, October - May.

Wesley Ringers (Grades 6 – 8) - Wednesdays, 5:00 - 5:30 in Room 220

Jubilate Ringers (9th grade and up) - Wednesdays, 6:00 – 7:00 pm in Room 220. The choir rings at the 10:55 am worship service once a month, October – May.

Youth Choir

The New Beginnings Youth Choir (6th through the 12th grade) rehearses from 5:00-6:00 PM each Sunday evening. We have lots of fun events lined up for the year, including community outreach opportunities and a DFW tour!

Children Choirs

We have three children’s choirs: Cherub for ages 3 thru Pre-K, Angel for kindergarten thru 2nd grade, and Bethlehem for grades 3rd through 5th. Rehearsals for all of the children’s choirs begin Wednesday, August 28 from 6:00-6:30. We welcome back Amy Taylor, who will conduct the Angel Choir; Nakita Harris will conduct the Cherub Choir, and Holly Johnston will conduct the Bethlehem Choir. We have a fun year of music planned and would love to see all of our kids in one of the choirs.

Nursery Needs

nursery sunday school.jpg

Do you or someone you know have a gift for taking care of the youngest children of Polk Street? The nursery is looking for one new worker to help take care and share God's love to those little ones in attendance on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. This is a paid position.  Please contact Merri Padilla at merripadilla@psumc.com or call the church office at 374-2891 for details.

Wednesday Night Programming

On Wednesdays, for the 2019-2020 school year PSUMC Kids will focus on 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. “don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you? Don’t you know that you have the Holy Spirit from God, and you don’t belong to yourselves? 20 You have been bought and paid for, so honor God with your body.”

This year we will learn how to honor God with our body by understanding how to take care of it. We want to be great examples to the world and part of that is taking care of the ONE body that God gave us.  On Wednesday evenings we will learn about: Nutrition·         Exercise·         Sleep ·         Stress management

There are a lot of pressures in the world and our goal is for our Polk Street Kids to be strong believers in Christ, both spiritually and physically!  With God, they can do anything!

The first series led by Health Coach and PSUMC member Farrar Mansfield begins tonite on Wednesday, August 28th at 6:30.  Spread the word and bring your friends!
